DAVID Duchovny’s out in a new film which opens Friday. It’s called “The Joneses.” His wife is played by Demi Moore, their kids by Amber Heard and Ben Hollingsworth. He was on the set of his TV show and only had a few minutes and sort of hurriedly explained the plot. I, sort of in a muddled way, got the plot. And now I must try to sort of explain it to you while he’s already away sort of seducing someone on “Californication.”

“It’s about a hypothetical family put there to inspire conspicuous consumption,” he said. “They’re planted in the community to sell their lifestyle. They’re not really a family. Their bodies and homes are full of product placement — sneakers, jewelry, electronics, clothing, cosmetics.

“It’s basically an idea that I had,” he said. “These are like moles. Stealth moles. Like a cell. It’s a satire. We’re not talking science-fiction here. It’s a comedy.”
And at the end? It falls apart?

“Well, by then it satisfies a few different experiences.”

A disembodied voice came on saying David only had a minute more to chat with me.

He talked about his wife, Tea Leoni. “We had a tough year and a half. We split up for a bit. We’ve been together 13 years. But we’re back. And living in New York. In New York, you don’t exist in a car. Your whole life isn’t planned. You can walk the streets. People smile or nod. You can see life. People don’t bother you.

“My mother lives here. It’s funny. Twenty years I’ve been in the business and, as I’m walking along, someone will say ‘Hi,’ and I’m polite so I give him a ‘Hi’ back, and my mother will say, ‘Where do you know him from?’

“Right now I’m in LA because I’m taping my show. But I love New York. My kids go to an Episcopal private school.”

The disembodied voice came on again with a crisp: “You have to go now, David.”

To which he then said to me: “Y’know, I always wanted to be a Knick. And I don’t think it’s too late.”

From USA Today: David Duchovny says he’s a changed man.
“I’m filled with humility and gratitude,” says the actor, who shot to fame on The X Files before being treated for sex addiction in 2008. “Before, I was focused on winning and deserving. I would say, ‘Oh, I deserve that.’ That’s not grateful. Grateful is, ‘Wow. I’m lucky. That’s fantastic.’ ”

Duchovny, who turns 50 in August, is sitting in a West Hollywood hotel suite discussing his new film, The Joneses (in theaters Friday). He plays Demi Moore’s fake husband in this romantic comedy/biting satire about stealth marketing.

As he discusses his character’s adolescent-like approach to life, Duchovny can’t help but reflect on his own final push toward maturity.

“I still feel like I haven’t grown up,” he says. “But I can judge from my work that I’m a lot more of a man than I was five years ago. Maybe I’m late. Maybe I’m on time. I’m happy it happened. It’s something you have to do. I paid attention. I didn’t coast. I asked some hard questions. I took some hard answers. I learned humility.”

Looking fit in slim-cut jeans and a nondescript pullover, Duchovny speaks quietly and calmly. “In this country, oddly, we have images of men as arrogant and aggressive,” he continues. “Humility is considered an unmasculine quality. What I found in the last five years is that humility is a beautiful thing.”

During Duchovny’s “maturing” period, he and his wife, actress Tea Leoni, separated. But they are back together, and he says, “things are terrific at home.”

He drops Leoni’s name into the conversation every few minutes. For instance, “Tea and I have a production company, and we’re developing projects.” Or, “Tea and I parent together, although if the kids had one phone call to make, they’d call their mom, probably.”

An ‘odd paradox’

Duchovny and Leoni met when they were both auditioning to be on The Tonight Show. Leoni, “a real extrovert,” Duchovny says, got the gig and the guy. They have two children, Madelaine West, 10, and Kyd Miller, 7.

The family now lives in New York, but Duchovny will return to Los Angeles to shoot Season 4 of his Showtime series, Californication, to air in the fall.

“Last season we left my character, Hank, going to jail,” he says. “We went about as far down as we could, so I think this year we’ll be rising up.”

Duchovny is fascinated with Hank and his problems. “He’s an odd paradox. He was with this woman he does love, and when they were together he was committed and monogamous. Since they split up, he’s kind of drifting passively. … Most people misread the show. They see it as a guy who’s always after women when, in fact, it’s the women who go after him, and he just doesn’t say no.

“I hope we can go six seasons. I think it’ll get canceled before I get tired of it.”

Duchovny calls The X Files “a cultural touchstone” and his official introduction to Hollywood.

“Sure, I’d worked before that. I’d played a transvestite on Twin Peaks. But in terms of mass appeal, it was The X Files, and the overwhelming feeling of The X Files is dark and brooding that attached itself to me.”

In The Joneses, Duchovny actually smiles on occasion. As Steve Jones, he charmingly tries to persuade everyone he meets to buy all the latest products he, his wife and two teenage kids are showing off. The “family” is actually a team of sales agents selling a very expensive lifestyle.

Wanting vs. getting

“My character (a former used-car salesman) is just smart enough to get this job but not smart enough to know he shouldn’t take it,” Duchovny says. “It’s a tough character to play. He’s both a winner and a loser.”

Duchovny understands the lure of wanting something you can’t quite afford. “I’ve seen things and thought, ‘Oh yeah, that’s a nice-looking island,’ ” he says. “Marlon Brando had that (Tahitian) island. I’ve had the fantasy to own a rock off the coast of Manhattan.”

The message of The Joneses, Duchovny points out, “is that keeping up with the Joneses is a fool’s errand. Money can’t buy you love. It’s all the things we say that we know, and yet the way we live puts the lie to it.”

Duchovny says he considers the film one of the high points of his 22-year career, along with The X Files and Californication.

“And I loved directing House of D (with Robin Williams),” he says, “no matter that the box office was not so good.”

HE’S the perfect dad in his new movie – but X Files star David Duchovny had to beat his personal demons to win back his own happy marriage.

The X Files star shocked fans when he announced he was going into rehab to fight his sex addiction. And many predicted his marriage was at an end.

Before he wed actress Tea Leoni in 1997, the TV star was linked to a string of women, including his X Files co-star Gillian Anderson.

But his marriage to Tea seemed a meeting of minds, as well as good looks. David went to prestigious Yale University until he abandoned his PhD for acting.

He was introduced to brainbox Tea over the phone by their agent, and the two started dating.

“She sent me a song by Ween called P*** Up A Rope,” he said. “She sang it to me over the phone. It’s really a funny song and the lyrics are really beautiful.”

It probably doesn’t get played on the radio much, but the song seemed to work its magic. The couple wed just nine weeks later and have two children: Madelaine West, 10, and Kyd Miller, seven, who are called by their middle names.

But less than two years ago, David stunned friends and fans when he announced he was going into rehab and it was discovered than the couple had been separated for months. The 12-year marriage between David, 49, and Tea 43, appeared to be over and out.

But love and kids brought them back together. Tea visited David during his rehab and gradually the couple started to be seen in public again.

Last year, they celebrated their healed marriage with a quality time holiday, packing their children into a minivan and touring the USA.

“It was a lot of fun. We were cooped-up with the kids in a big bus and we got to know one another very, very well,” said the star. “Eleven days was the exact right amount of time and I’d never seen the Grand Canyon. I’d never seen Niagara Falls. Maybe one day my children will look back on it and love it.”

David regards his marital problems as a private matter.

But it’s ironic that in his TV show Californication he also plays a dad who struggled with women and commitment.

No wonder fans have wondered if David feels that sexy dad Hank Moody crossed the line between fiction and reality.

David says that’s not the case. “The things that I do on the show have never had anything to do with my personal life,” he said. “There has never been any kind of parallel.”
Unlike other, more prickly, stars, David understands the interest from fans in his private life.

“I try to be grateful for the interest – and sometimes I try to think of it as people actually caring,” said the down-to-earth star. “The problem comes for people around me that didn’t ask for that scrutiny. My wife is an actress, so she’s aware, but for the kids, it becomes sticky.

“Sometimes these are issues or things that are said that they possibly couldn’t understand. That’s the difficult part.”

Now that he’s got his life back on track, David is set to star in his first film since X Files: I Want To Believe. And this time he’s cast as the perfect husband and father in The Joneses.

The film is about a family who look as if they have it all – love, good-looks and a lavish lifestyle.

They’re the envy of all the neighbours, who don’t realise that David, screen wife Demi Moore and their two kids are actually employees of a marketing firm, who are supposed to inspire the locals to buy whatever they are wearing or using.

As David explained: “We’re a family that is put in a neighbourhood to advertise certain items, such as cars, clothes. So, we’re not really a family. We don’t sleep in the same bed.”

In the movie, the Jones are revealed to be a business, and Demi is actually David’s boss.

It’s a fascinating, funny look at the way companies try to market everything from clothes to gadgets.

But David says that he’s no gadget freak in real life – and has to get his daughter to help.

“I’m kind of stupid when it comes to gadgets,” he confesses.

“But my daughter is a magician on my computer. My jaw drops open when she’s on it. If anything ever goes wrong on our computer, both Tea and I call West – she’s 10 – to fix it and she does it.”

One thing West and little brother Kyd can’t do, however, is watch their dad’s raunchy scenes as a womaniser in Californication.

“I would be surprised and shocked and mortified if there were people showing this show to a 10 and seven-year-old.” he said.

“But when they are old enough to watch it, I would want my kids to respect whatever work I’ve done’.

David’s own father left the family when he was 11. Dad Amram moved to Paris to write, while Scots mother Meg stayed in Manhattan to raise David and siblings Daniel and Laurie.

Meg, originally from Whitehills, Aberdeen, made sure they knew about their Scottish roots. David brought one of his movies, Return To Me, for a premiere in Edinburgh – and wore a Hunting MacFarlane kilt for the occasion.

“I’m very proud of my Scottish blood,” he said.

And he credits his mother with instilling in him some Scottish caution, despite the millions he has earned.

“Immediately I made some money, the first thing I would do was to put it away for a rainy day. I am always afraid of it disappearing and ending up in the gutter.’”

“I don’t make decisions based on money. I don’t think I ever have, but on the other hand, I don’t dislike it.

“I am not a miser but it is nice to have for my family and it is nice to be able to have the luxury of having things for my family.

“I have never chosen to do a job just because of the money.”

Maybe that’s why he says he’s game to embark on a third X Files adventure with Gillian Anderson.

David found fame in the spooky sci-fi series but he eventually quit. Now however, he’s happy to find if the truth is out there again.

David said: “I love that show and I love the characters on it. Yes I’d do another X Files movie. ” Meanwhile his Scots upbringing may also have influenced the way David treats his own kids.

“I’m turning into a stricter dad,” he said. “I always thought I’d be the fun dad, the friend dad but I appear to be the dad dad and Tea is less strict. So, it’s a surprise to me.

“I never let them out of the house,” he joked. “That’s how strict I am”.

David Duchovny appeared happy to be at the Toronto Film Festival, where he’s promoting his new movie The Joneses, except for one thing: He was without his wife, Téa Leoni, and their kids, Madelaine West, 10, and Kyd Miller, 7.

“I had to leave them this morning to come here – that’s tough,” Duchovny, 49, told PEOPLE at the film’s Sunday premiere. Though last fall the couple separated, that was then. Now at home, he says, “Everything is great.”

After calling Leoni, whom he married in 1997, a “great partner, wife, and mother” (and a killer on the tennis court, to boot), Duchovny talked up his cross-country family vacation over the summer. His favorite part of the journey? “Just being with my kids and watching them open up,” he tells PEOPLE. “Just watching them relate to new people and new experiences – it’s just great seeing them as little people.”

Derrick Borte, director of The Joneses, added that it became evident during the filming of the movie just how devoted a family man Duchovny is.

Dad Duty
“I’d go visit him in his trailer and one of them is hiding in the cabinets in there and they’re running around… climbing all over him,” says Borte.

But that’s not to say the Californication star’s on daddy duty all the time.

“He’s a prankster and a jokester and really keeps everybody fresh and loose just by his humor,” Borte says, adding that he could share any of Duchovny’s jokes “without bleeping things out. But [he's] just a very funny guy. Very warm and giving and fun to work with … And the smartest guy in the room.”

Though David Duchovny and Téa Leoni confirmed that they have been separated for several months, a source who knows the couple says they still appear close and friendly.

“They get along great together,” says a source in their New York City neighborhood.

“They are such a nice family, so down-to-earth,” the source adds. The family was seen together at the Czech Street Festival in Manhattan earlier this month.

Duchovny, 48, and Leoni, 42, were married in 1997. They have two children, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd, 6.

Speaking to PEOPLE last week, before the separation announcement and following Duchovny’s release from rehab for sex addiction, Gossip Girl star Madchen Amick (who will appear on Duchovny’s Showtime series Californication later this season), told PEOPLE: “I know that his family is really important to him, and he always speaks fondly about them. The only hard part about doing the show [in California] is being away from them. But I know he really adores them.”

Duchovny is currently preparing for an upcoming starring role in The Joneses, also starring Demi Moore.

“In light of continuous speculation over the lives and marriage of Tea Leoni and David Duchovny, the couple has confirmed that they have in fact been separated for several months,” the statement says. “The couple had hoped to keep this separation private for the sake of their children.”

Duchovny, 48, has been married to actress Leoni since 1997. They have two children, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd, 6.

The actor voluntarily entered rehab last summer “for the treatment of sex addiction,” he said in a statement issued in August.

Earlier this month, Duchnovny had “successfully completed the rehab program,” his lawyer said. Duchovny was then spotted with Leoni at the Czech Street Festival in Manhattan.

The separation statement was released by reps Annett Wolf and Evelyn Karamanos.
