The X-Files made David Duchovny an international celebrity. What began as a lark on the way to a Ph.D. at Yale became his calling, and the Golden Globe-winning actor brings that intense intellect to his roles. Before stardom, he had a recurring role on the series Twin Peaks and made guest appearances on The Larry Sanders Show. Crossing over to the big screen, Duchovny’s film credits include House of D—his film directorial and writing debut—and The Joneses. He now stars in the Showtime series, Californication.

David Duchovny appeared happy to be at the Toronto Film Festival, where he’s promoting his new movie The Joneses, except for one thing: He was without his wife, Téa Leoni, and their kids, Madelaine West, 10, and Kyd Miller, 7.

“I had to leave them this morning to come here – that’s tough,” Duchovny, 49, told PEOPLE at the film’s Sunday premiere. Though last fall the couple separated, that was then. Now at home, he says, “Everything is great.”

After calling Leoni, whom he married in 1997, a “great partner, wife, and mother” (and a killer on the tennis court, to boot), Duchovny talked up his cross-country family vacation over the summer. His favorite part of the journey? “Just being with my kids and watching them open up,” he tells PEOPLE. “Just watching them relate to new people and new experiences – it’s just great seeing them as little people.”

Derrick Borte, director of The Joneses, added that it became evident during the filming of the movie just how devoted a family man Duchovny is.

Dad Duty
“I’d go visit him in his trailer and one of them is hiding in the cabinets in there and they’re running around… climbing all over him,” says Borte.

But that’s not to say the Californication star’s on daddy duty all the time.

“He’s a prankster and a jokester and really keeps everybody fresh and loose just by his humor,” Borte says, adding that he could share any of Duchovny’s jokes “without bleeping things out. But [he's] just a very funny guy. Very warm and giving and fun to work with … And the smartest guy in the room.”

Hundreds of fans packed onto Hollywood Boulevard, many having queued overnight, to cheer on the welcome return of Mulder and Scully at the world premiere of The X-Files: I Want To Believe.

Lovers of the show, which first aired on TV in 1993, screamed and went crazy as David Duchovny arrived early to spend some time with the crowds. The actor was swiftly joined by actress Gillian Anderson, dressed in a blue satin dress that had been designed to fit snuggly around her tiny baby bump.

Speaking on the red carpet Gillian said it had been a pleasure to reunite with her former cast mate: “I think that our appreciation for each other has increased over the years. We’ve been in contact and we’ve gotten older, but I think we were both hugely excited to come back together again and it felt like a treat. Like I’m having an opportunity now to work with somebody, as opposed to ‘ehrrghhh another day, not again!’”

David praised the dedication of the fans that had waited patiently for hours in the baking California sunshine: “It’s nice that they still want the show after all these years, I don’t know what brings them out but I’m just happy they’re here.”

Writer and producer Frank Spotnitz was just relieved the film’s top secret plot hadn’t been leaked onto the internet: “I have to say it’s a miracle we did it and we did keep it a secret.”
