Chris: First of all, congratulations on the Golden Globe win!
David: Thank you.
Chris: Does it surprise you at all that this show, five years ago,
was on a fledgling network and that it probably wouldn't make it past six
months, now all of the sudden you win every big award there is to win.
David: Yeah, eat it!
Chris: You guys are like the Mark Spitz of television, you've won
every award there is to win.
David Duchovny talks about surprising Tea
Leoni for Valentine's Day.

David: Yeah, that's true. Well, we haven't won an Emmy. We actually
haven't won anything. We've won the Golden Globes a few, three times now.
They're the best. Love the Golden Globe people, they're my favorite. What
else have we won?
Chris: The respect of millions!
David: We've won the respect of millions.
Chris: That goes a long way though, especially in the TV business.
Does It shock you at all when you sit back and look at it, because the Golden
Globe win really put you on the map, you've won it a number of times, does
it ever make you say "wow, this is incredible"
David: It was a big deal for us. There's nothing like the first time,
which is cliche, but it's true. It was just such a surprise, probably the
way Ally McBeal was thought of this year. They just didn't expect to win,
I didn't even know what they were doing in that category, actually. I'm just
happy they weren't in our category because they would have won ours! But,
it was just like that! We just heard "X-Files" and I just jumped out of my
chair, it was really a great moment in my life and after you do that for
the first time, you know, not to belittle anything that comes after, but
it's never, never the same.
Chris: Now you guys have been here since the shows inception and
now you guys are moving to Los Angeles, it that tough....
David: Are we!? I'm always the last to know. I thought we were moving
to Toledo?
Chris: No, you're going to L.A.
David: I thought we were going to shoot in Cleveland. I've been saying
I want to shoot in Cleveland for the last three or four years and nobody's
listening to me.
Duchovny discusses his plans to have
kids.
|
Chris: No? Why not? I mean, you are the star of the show, why don't
they take you a little more seriously?
David: Good question, good question.
Chris: Does it bother you at all that you're going to be leaving?
I mean I know it's what you wanted, but you've probably established relationships
up here with people, cast and crew.
David: Well, sure! I'm gonna miss the crew, we've worked together
for five years, I'm gonna miss certain people on the crew. I'm gonna miss
the city, you know, it's a really easy city to live in. It's clean and it's
nice and it's safe and you don't get the celebrity crap that you get mostly
in Hollywood. You know, you don't get people buzzing your house with helicopter
or taking your picture as you walk down the street. It's much easier, actually
to go about your daily life here. I'll miss all that but, you know, I'll
like living with my wife and I'll like living in my house and all that.
Chris:Well, now that you've got a year anniversary coming up in the
next couple of months, correct?
David: Yeah, in May.
Chris:And the new house, it's like this whole new world for you back
there.
David: (sings) A whole new world...
Chris: It does kinda make you want to sing!
David: What is that song from? "The Little Mermaid"?
Chris: "The Lion King"?
David: One of those animated films.
Chris: What's the new house like?
David: The new house is fine, it's great! It's the only house I've
ever owned really. Well, the bank owns it, but it's the only house I've ever
not paid rent at. Well, you pay mortgage which is like rent, but....
Chris: Your name is on the mailbox.
David: Well, no it's not!
Chris:Not yet?
David: Never, you know, I don't want anybody to know that I live there.
Somebody else's name is on the box, but you know, it's great. It's a great
feeling!
Chris: Are you the decorator type?
David: No, but my wife is.
Chris: Are you just letting her do the whole thing?
David Duchovny talks about his house in
Canada.
|
David: Yeah, she's got wonderful taste. I don't have taste myself
but I can see it when other people have it. And that's the case here.
Chris: Well, she married you so she must have some pretty good taste!!
Now, she's coming up tomorrow?
David: Actually she is.
Chris: Does that make things easier? It's got to be tough to be away
for so long.
David: It's hard, you're always coming or going. That's the hard
part.
Chris: Now, with the show moving down there, how are you going to
duplicate some of the looks that you get up here?
David: I don't know. Thankfully, that's not my problem, it'd the
DP's problem. But you know, they have things called filters and you know,
DP's are paid a lot of money to figure these things out.
Chris: Aren't you going to miss this beautiful sunshine? (laughs)
David: Actually, when you stay in L.A. too long you do miss the weather,
you miss having the weather. You miss having seasons, and I'll miss that.
And on a day like today, when the sun finally does shine, it's great!
Chris: Oh, you mean the sun's not out every day up here?
David: It's out, it's just above the clouds. You know, it's a funny
thing when you fly out of Vancouver sometimes you break through the clouds
and you go "Oh my God! It's been up here all the time"! It's beautiful.
Chris: It's beautiful out here, you just haven't seen it underneath
all that rain the last thirteen days. Is that right, I heard it on the news
that it's been raining the last thirteen days here?
David: It's been raining a lot but you know, I'm not really allowed
to comment on that any more, because I said something jokingly once that
it rains a lot here and I've been persona non grata ever since. You know
even though the weather is the most frequently talked about subject here,
I am excluded from that dialogue!!
Chris: Off limits. Alright, we won't talk about that. You've got a
movie coming up...
David: I've got a gag order.
Chris: About the weather or the movie?
David: Both actually.
Chris:I'm not going to ask you about the plot because I'm sure you've
been asked that a number of times, and I know you can't answer about that...
David: Too bad because I was going there...
Chris: Geez, I blew it!! In that case, let me ask you again, can you
answer something about the plot?
David: Too late, too late.
Chris: Now I've blown my opportunity, I'll come back to it. For a
person who's never watched "The X-Files" before, is this the type of movie
that they're going to be able to come in and pick up on?
David: That's the thing about the movie, I think the biggest hurdle
that was facing Chris and the writers was to make it a movie that exists,
not only for the fans but also for people that just want to go to the movies
and haven't seen the TV show, and I think that it does. I think that it was
a really hard kind of balancing act to do and I think that they've done it,
so that you can just wander into the theater, say, that if "Titanic" is sold
out, because I think "Titanic" will still be out by then, right? So say "Titanic"
is sold out and you just say "Oh damn, I'll see that stupid X-whatever movie",
and you'd go in and you'd still understand it and it would still be a good
movie. And, of course, it gives something extra to the fans as well. It helps
to know, but you don't need to.
Chris: Is there any type of apprehension on your behalf knowing that
it's a TV show, you've got twenty millions viewers a week but does twenty
millions viewers a week translate into a big box office?
David: Well, I think so. I think that the fans are really loyal, you
know. I have a feeling, we won't know until it comes out but my impression
is that the fans of the show a re very loyal and interested in it so if just
half of the fans who are loyal go the movie I think it will do well, so I
can't imagine them not! I would!!
Chris: Now, "Entertainment Weekly" says this is a gamble. Why do you
think that this is such a gamble, a movie that does so well and has shown
such a rapid growth over the years, why would this be such a gamble I don't
understand.
David: Neither do I, but I don't understand a lot in that magazine.
Chris: Now if the movie does well, do you then maybe say to yourself,
"Ah, maybe we just keep it in the feature film line rather than do a sixth
season"?
David: Well, youknow, I mean honestly as an actor in the show, that
would be a better life choice for me. I would love to...It's hard to do the
show ten months out of the year and feel creative as an actor and as a person,
but if I was to do a movie every four or five years, say, if we were lucky
enough to have the success of the "Bond" series or the "Star Trek" or something
like that and you came back and did a movie every four years, every five
years, that'd be great. I would be like high school reunion and it would
be fun to come back to Mulder after a break, it's hard to be Mulder, you
know, six years, seven years in a row.
Chris: Is there a point in your life where you say "Well, maybe the
movie is going to hurt the TV series"?
David: Well, we're in the fifth year of the TV series, I mean
realistically, who many years does the TV series go? What, are we going to
go ten years of a drama? That's never been done and I would be very unhappy
if it went ten years. I think that the TV show has done so well and has grown
steadily over five years, I think that it's apples and oranges and I think
that it's all just filler until the movie comes out and we see how it does.
Chris: Have you seen any preliminary clips?
David: No, I've only seen that trailer which was pretty exciting.
I didn't recognize myself.
Chris: You mean you looked that good?
David: It was very dark. I think I was in it, I might have been cut
out of the movie.
Chris: Now with the hiatus coming up in a couple of months, anything
planned or are you just strictly going to play husband and work on the house?
David: Well, you know, if something great comes a long, I'm gonna
do it. I'm not gonna work just to work. It's very hard because the hiatus
is so short it's hard to find a role that you can give yourself to. It's
easy enough for me to find work, I can always do a movie, but I don't want
to work just to work. I want to commit to something worthwhile rather thanjust
make some money and fill my time, so, we'll see.
Chris: Now, how much better is life being married?
David: It's a lot better.
Chris: Are you a much happier guy now, does it make work easier?
David: Well, work is hard because I'm far away, I don't want to belittle
that hardship. I'm married but we don't live together. I'd rather live together
and not be married, if I had the choice! It kinda plants your feet firmly
and you can take a better swing that way!!
